Tree Planting

Two programs offered to increase the native biodiversity and resilience of Niagara’s trees; Rural Tree Planting Program to increase woodland habitat and our Urban ‘Re-leaf’ Tree Program to increase the urban canopy of our cities.

Species At Risk

A “species at risk” is any naturally-occurring plant or animal in danger of extinction or of disappearing from the province. Find out more on the species at risk in Niagara and what you can do to help.

Woodworking For Nature

In today’s world youth rarely get the opportunity to work hands on with tools, wood and their own creativity. This program enables youth to connect these skills by creating habitat structures for wildlife.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Land Care Niagara is a not-for-profit organization run by donations and successful funding grants. The majority of LCN activities require additional funding from individuals, foundations, private business and corporations.

It can be difficult to tell how many eggs a female It can be difficult to tell how many eggs a female monarch butterfly lays in the wild. The average is probably somewhere between 100 and 300 eggs. Studies of captive female monarchs have of about 700 eggs per female over two to five weeks of egg laying! Wow! That's egg-citing!

A Monarch Butterfly has four parts to its life cyc A Monarch Butterfly has four parts to its life cycle, Egg, Caterpillar, Pupa and Adult. It takes about one month for a Monarch to go from egg to adult. Some adults migrate and live all winter, while others do not and live two to six weeks. Treasure them while they last!

Our last invasive species highlight is garlic must Our last invasive species highlight is garlic mustard! Garlic mustard is an invasive plant that was brought to North America in the 1800’s to be used as a herb. Garlic mustard has become a big issue in Niagara’s forests and edge habitats. Like other invasive species, garlic mustard spreads quickly and outcompetes native species. A single plant can produce up to 150 seed pods with 20 seeds per pod, and each seed can remain viable for up to 30 years in the soil!

Here are some ways you can mitigate the spread of garlic mustard:

If you find garlic mustard in your yard, bag it and throw it in the garbage!
Never compost garlic mustard!
Clean your shoes after a hike! You can unintentionally spread the seeds to new areas!
Join a volunteer pull in the spring with a local environmental organization!
Report sightings on the EDDMaps app!
