Tree Planting

Two programs offered to increase the native biodiversity and resilience of Niagara’s trees; Rural Tree Planting Program to increase woodland habitat and our Urban ‘Re-leaf’ Tree Program to increase the urban canopy of our cities.

Species At Risk

A “species at risk” is any naturally-occurring plant or animal in danger of extinction or of disappearing from the province. Find out more on the species at risk in Niagara and what you can do to help.

Woodworking For Nature

In today’s world youth rarely get the opportunity to work hands on with tools, wood and their own creativity. This program enables youth to connect these skills by creating habitat structures for wildlife.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Land Care Niagara is a not-for-profit organization run by donations and successful funding grants. The majority of LCN activities require additional funding from individuals, foundations, private business and corporations.

Welcome back to our Sunday Funday winter tree iden Welcome back to our Sunday Funday winter tree identification series! Another great diagnostic feature when ID'ing deciduous trees in early spring is to examine the buds! Swipe to the next picture for some terminology.

Buds are growing points on a tree, meaning they can become shoots, flowers, or leaves, depending on the bud. Terminal buds are at the tip of branches and allow the plant to grow upward. They contain tissue called the "apical meristem" which enables extension. Lateral buds grow along the side of a branch and permit outgrowth. Now swipe to the next few photos for some species with distinct bud characteristics!

🌳American Beech trees (Fagus grandifolia) have long, sharp, pointed buds and are copper-coloured with a scaled appearance.

🌳Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) have more rounded, fuzzy, grey buds. They also have noticeably larger terminal buds compared to their lateral buds.

🌳Bitternut hickory trees (Carya cordiformis) have yellow, powdery buds. Similarly to black walnuts, the terminal buds are also noticeably larger than the lateral buds.

🌳Basswood trees (Tilia americana) have plump, red buds with 1-2 bud scales per bud.

Tune in next week for our final installment of the winter tree identification series: leaf scar!
The Transverse Lady Beetle is an endangered specie The Transverse Lady Beetle is an endangered species in Ontario. There have been no reports of the species in Ontario since 1990! Main threats include the introduction of non-native lady beetles that reduce available food sources, parasitic wasps that prey on them, diseases, and pesticide use.

You can help this species by reducing pesticide use in both urban and agricultural areas, and keeping an eye out for them in your neighborhood. Try using the Seek or iNaturalist apps when your outdoors this Spring to help identify the insects that are in your area - you never know what you might find! Report any sightings of Species-at-risk to the Natural Heritage Information Centre.
Spring is fast approaching, and that means we will Spring is fast approaching, and that means we will soon be planting over 20,000 trees across the Niagara Region! Today, we took a tour of some of the properties being planted this year, to make sure everything is ready to go for Spring! Thank you to all the landowners, students, and team members for joining us and making the most of an unexpectedly cold day! ❄️❄️ We look forward to working with everyone this year to improve the environment throughout the region!#🌲 🌳 if you are a landowner interested in participating in our Rural Tree Planting Program - contact us for more information!
