Land Care Niagara is currently engaged in a habitat stewardship project for monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies are considered Endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and a species of Special Concern by the Government of Canada. A couple of the main threats facing monarch butterflies are habitat loss, and increased use of herbicide. We at Land Care Niagara believe that they are an important species worth preserving.
The main objectives of the project are:
- Creating monarch habitat which will benefit all stages of the lifecycle.
- Collaborating with landowners in the community to foster good practices for monarch support.
- Communicating with the agricultural sector, to develop best management practices for land use and care, that supports monarch butterflies.
- Monitoring monarch butterflies, and contributing to the ongoing species databases.
- Educating and assisting communities to learn about the species, and aid in the recovery effort.
