John received a BSc degree in Geography/Zoology and MSc degree from the former Institute for Environmental Studies, University of Toronto. This was followed by contract work with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Parks Canada, and Ontario Council of Commercial Fishermen, together with time spent working in Tokyo and at the Faculty of Fisheries, University of Hokkaido on a Japanese government scholarship. Returning to Canada, John obtained a PhD from the Department of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. He subsequently worked as faculty at the Department of Genetics of the University of Pennsylvania and until 2021 at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He investigated the molecular biology of retrotransposons, mobile DNA comprising almost half the human genome. He now lives in Grimsby in a house owned by his family for 65 years. By working with Land Care Niagara, John is pleased to return to his first interests in sustainable development and biodiversity, and at a time when such concerns have unprecedented importance.
